Dental hygiene in Basel
Dental hygiene is the most effective prevention against caries, periodontitis and therefore tooth loss. It removes what a toothbrush cannot reach: hard and soft deposits, tartar below the gumline and discolouration from coffee, tea or nicotine.
At our dental clinic in Basel it is not an add-on but the foundation for everything else: for fillings, crowns, implants and for the warranty we give on them.
30 to 60 minutes
Depending on the findings. With a lot of tartar or a longer break since the last cleaning, we plan more time from the start.
Below the gumline too
Ultrasound, hand instruments and air polishing remove what the toothbrush cannot reach.
Bonus card
After six dental hygiene sessions, the seventh is free. Regularity is what works in the long run.
Pain-free
With healthy gums the treatment is pain-free. Sensitive tooth necks can be numbed locally on request.
How dental hygiene works at our clinic
Three steps that belong together. Which of them your session needs is decided by the findings at the start.
Examination
Teeth and gums are assessed and the gum pockets measured. These findings decide whether a cleaning is enough or periodontitis treatment is needed.
Cleaning
Hard and soft deposits are removed with ultrasound and hand instruments, also below the gumline. Discolouration is removed with air polishing (Air-Flow). Finally the teeth are polished so that new deposits adhere less easily.
Advice
Brushing technique, aids for the spaces between teeth, how to deal with sensitive tooth necks. This is the part that makes the difference between two appointments.
How long does it take, and how often is it needed?
Depending on the findings, a session takes 30 to 60 minutes. With a lot of tartar, deep gum pockets or a longer break since the last cleaning, it can take longer.
The interval is set individually: every three, six, nine or twelve months. Shorter intervals make sense with periodontitis, implants, fixed braces, for smokers and with heavy tartar build-up. The rhythm is reviewed and adjusted at every session. In between, the six-monthly check-up helps to detect problems early.
What dental hygiene costs in Basel
The costs depend on the time required, billed in 5-minute increments, and on the tax point value. A well-kept set of teeth with little build-up takes less time than one that has not been cleaned for two years. You pay for the actual work, not a flat rate. Basic health insurance in Switzerland does not cover dental hygiene, but many supplementary dental insurances contribute. On top of that there is our bonus card: after six dental hygiene sessions the seventh is free, because regularity is the only factor that works in the long run.
Dental hygiene with implants, crowns and bridges
Implants are cleaned just like your own teeth; the difference lies in the check. An inflammation around an implant (peri-implantitis) develops gradually and can endanger the implant. At every session we therefore rule out that peri-implantitis has developed. Crown margins and the spaces under bridges are checked just as carefully, because problems show up there first. At our clinic, the six-monthly check-up with dental hygiene is a condition for the warranty on dental restorations and implants.
Does dental hygiene hurt?
With healthy gums the treatment is pain-free. Sensitive tooth necks or inflamed gums can react; on request we numb locally. Nobody should postpone a cleaning for fear of pain, because that is exactly what leads to longer and more unpleasant sessions. If it has been a while since your last cleaning, tell us on the phone and we will plan more time from the start.
Frequently asked questions about dental hygiene
What is the difference between dental hygiene and professional teeth cleaning?
None. «Dental hygiene» is the common term in Switzerland for what is called «professional teeth cleaning» in Germany. More about the term in the dental glossary.
Can I eat right after dental hygiene?
Yes, you can eat and drink again immediately.
Do the gums bleed during cleaning?
Slight bleeding indicates inflammation and is no cause for concern. With regular dental hygiene and good care it stops within a few days. Background in the glossary: bleeding gums.
Is dental hygiene advisable during pregnancy?
Yes, especially so. Hormonal changes make the gums more prone to inflammation; dental hygiene is possible at every stage of pregnancy.
Does dental hygiene make teeth whiter?
It removes external discolouration and restores the natural tooth colour. Whitening beyond your own tooth colour can only be achieved with bleaching.
From what age is dental hygiene useful?
Children benefit from regular prophylaxis from school age; from adolescence with permanent teeth, six-monthly dental hygiene is recommended.
Does health insurance cover dental hygiene?
Basic insurance does not. Many supplementary dental insurances contribute, depending on the policy.
